10 Sep How I Overcome A Lack Of Motivation.
Hello everyone! This is Sarah Jacobs. Today we’re going to talk about having motivation and staying motivated. When you’re an entrepreneur, it’s all on you, you are the responsible one to stay motivated.
You are the responsible to stay focused, to stay positive. So of course, motivation is a very, very big deal for everyone! But especially for entrepreneurs. I’ve been an entrepreneur for almost 15 years. And in that period of time, I have learned a lot. I have made many mistakes, of course, but I learned out of those mistakes. And one thing that I learned is that motivation, is not really connected only with dreams, that was what I thought at the beginning. Motivation is connected with purpose. It is very important to have dreams. And this is a point that I struggled with a lot at the beginning, honestly, because I didn’t, uh, recognized this or feel like I had the same dreams as many people who might think, “okay, I want to have five cars. I want to have a lot of money. I want to have a private jet” and this is something I respect a lot, don’t get me wrong, I really respected, but it’s not something that I’ve feel attracted to.
I want to have a good lifestyle, of course, but it’s not something that I would put all my effort for. And it took me a while to understand that. What I came to realize was my dreams were more about living a lifestyle where I can travel, where I can get to know different cultures, where I can decide where to be, when I could go and for how long. It had to do more with the experience of how I want to experience life or feeling this freedom that I’m the one deciding at any time and that is very important. It’s very important that you find your dreams. Your dreams are the direction that you have to go, because if you are active, but you don’t exactly know where you’re heading to, what results you want to achieve, you will just be walking in circles and you will feel very active and like you’ve put a lot of energy into things, but you won’t feel productive. And that honestly, is exhausting. I’ve been through that too.
I’ve been through the moments where I felt like I’m doing so much. I’m exhausted every day after hours and hours of working, but I don’t seem to get anywhere. And that was because I didn’t have clear goals. So goals equals your dreams.
If you don’t know what results you want to achieve, you will never be able to walk towards that. And even if it’s just a little step closer every day, at least you’re walking in the right direction. Right? It’s very important that we have these dreams, because they give you the energy to keep on walking. But, I will say, what I learned in all these years is that the real motivation, that deep motivation, especially during times where everything is super difficult, where nothing goes like you want to, where you receive a lot of rejection, the real motivation doesn’t come from these freedoms.
The real motivation comes from finding your purpose. And it was very hard for me at the beginning. I didn’t know what purpose I had or what I wanted to do. Purpose has to do with something greater than yourself. Something that goes beyond what you can only do. Purpose has to do with trust.
Leaving a footprint on this planet that you will feel proud of. The version of yourself that you became – what you did, of what you ignited for others. Purpose has to do with the feeling that the real reason or that you have the potential to really help in that area. So for some people, purpose might have to do with children, with animals, with nature, with legacy, it doesn’t matter. However, it’s important to find out what do you really wish before dying. Because we all die and that’s a reality. But before dying the seconds before you die, what are the things you wish you would feel proud of? “I’m so proud that I did this” or that I helped him with that thing or that I could support these people or that I could leave this for other generations.” If we really do this exercise of finding our purpose, that will give us the strength to keep on going.
Maybe you’re not aware of now but it will really give you a lot of strength. And this is the deep motivation, especially during difficult times that we all go through. There is no single entrepreneur that hasn’t been through a difficult time. Actually entrepreneurs usually go more through difficult times than most!
What makes us different from the rest is that we understand that these are difficult times are there for us to learn and to improve and become better. And we’re accepting them and we’re willing to go through them because we know that will get us closer to our final result or to our true purpose.
So, motivation really has to do with purpose. And it’s not an easy exercise! I recommend that you invest in finding this purpose. Spend a day, or even a couple of days thinking, “what would make me feel proud before dying?” What do you want to achieve? What do I want to support? Maybe you don’t have to create something for yourself, but maybe it’s supporting projects that already exist.
I really hope that this post helped you! It is something that I’ve learned, as I said throughout these years and that took me a while to figure out! It’s an exercise that you have to do with intention. You have to consciously put the intention in finding what is your purpose, because that will, not only make you a great entrepreneur, it will make you a better person. It will help you get closer to the version of yourself that you want to become. And I think that’s the best thing that can happen to us. No one likes to die and feel ashamed of themselves or regret everything they would have done or could have done. And that they didn’t do because of fears. And that’s only because they couldn’t get closer to the version of, of themselves that they wanted to become.
So invest in yourself. Spend some time in finding out what is the greater thing that you really want to impact and all the work and all the dreams that you will achieve. And all these goals will make you more happy, of course! But, what is the greater thing behind that that will really get you closer to the version of yourself you want to become?
See you all next time!
