7 Steps To Becoming A Better Leader.

Hello everyone!This is Sarai Jacobs. Today we’re going to talk about leadership and the best way to do that is to talk about an amazing writer that dedicated most of his life to learning and improving leadership. His name is Stephen Covey. You may have even read some of his books heard about him. In his books, he pointed out different things that a good leader needs. And leadership is not only for someone who’s an entrepreneur. Leadership is basically for everyone to just keep moving and evolving into that version of themselves that they aspire to be. I always talk about that A LOT because it’s so important to strive for that version of yourself each and every day. So, according to Stephen Covey, there are seven points that a good leader needs to make. And I just wanted to go through them and talk about them with my own words and my own experience, I would be really happy if it could help someone. 

First thing that he said is that a leader has to be proactive. So someone who develops leadership has to be proactive because that’s the main thing. If you don’t make things happen, things will probably not happen the way you want and even if you’re a proactive person, sometimes things don’t go the way you want, but just waiting and waiting and waiting for life to do the things that you want that’s a fantasy. I’m very sorry to maybe break this bubble that you’re in. You are the one that has to make things happen. So being proactive as a first step, when you want to develop leadership. And it’s also something that you have to encourage other people to do, because it’s not good to be just you, the leader and have people following you that are just doing whatever you say, but you have to encourage other people to also develop their own leadership because that’s the real thing about leadership. Inspiring others to also develop themselves. It’s not about who is the best and who should we follow and yeah, whatever you say, it’s about helping others to also develop themselves in, into finding their own purpose, uh, finding what they’re good in and what they could improve upon. So helping others to develop this leadership is super important as well. 

Second one is having a goal in your mind. If you’re just doing things randomly without knowing what you’re pursuing it is exhausting because you will feel so tired. And at the end of the day, you never have something because you didn’t have a goal in your mind. So you have to know why you’re doing things. What is the ultimate goal behind that? And it could be a goal that will not be present today, or that will not be manifested today. Maybe it’s something that you’re working towards and maybe this will manifest themselves in a couple of years, but at least, you have the goal in your mind and you’re working and you’re doing things towards that goal. That’s super important. Otherwise, it will be super exhausting. You will feel very active, like you did a lot of things, but at the end of the day, you’ll have no results because you didn’t know which direction you were heading to.

So you have to learn to have clear goals, and if you need help on that. Read books about it, ask people that, that are very good in planning things and being very strategic, because that’s super important. 

Third point is Stephen Covey likes to say “first things first”. Prioritizing, basically we have to prioritize our tasks our time. And I’ve been talking about that in other videos as well, that every person is totally different because some people are very productive in the morning. Others are very productive in the evening and that’s only up to us to know which timeframe is our best timeframe to work, but we have to prioritize our day, our agenda, our work schedule, if we don’t do that, and I know it from my own experience, it is essential for you to really develop that skill of seeing or identifying which task will complete first or which decisions do I have to take now that will affect the other things on my to do list. That prioritizing of your agenda will have a big impact and your time management and your energy levels and especially in your results. 

Fourth point that Stephen Covey talks about whenever it comes to a good leadership is to have the win win mindset. Don’t try to become a good leader or don’t try to make a good business or a good deal by thinking that because of someone else losing you will win. There is the win, win concept. And it’s true. And I know because I live it every day. The way I work is that I gain if I help others gain. So it’s a win, win situation. If you have that in mind, if your actions are always surrounded by this concept, you can help others win and you will win too. There is no need for someone else to lose for you to win. Leadership is not about helping others to fail or making others be in a worse situation. Leadership is about empowering others, and this is super important because you can only really empower yourself by empowering other people. That’s a reality. So try to always have that in your mind, try always to find this win, win situation. 

So fifth point then Stephen Covey talked about in this leadership concept, is that before you want everyone to understand, you try to understand them first. And this is something we’ve heard maybe from our grandparents and our parents and at school and from many people. It’s very important that before we put our point of view, as the point of view or the ultimate point of view, that we try to understand the other people because that will give us hints of how they think, what’s the emotion behind that thought, what triggered that emotion? What can I do so that they can change that point of view? Or what did I do unconsciously that triggered that emotion in them and that they understood things in this way? This point is super important when you work with other people. When you want to be a good leader and you have a team of people that you have to work with, or you have to lead a company or an organization, whatever it is, but this is also a point that is very important in any type of relationship you have. Because a relationship, a solid relationship where both parties can grow, it can benefit from that relationship and has better chances to survive. If you’re willing to understand the other part, rather than just taking as an obvious thing that your point of view is the only point of view and that they have to adapt to that. And it’s not easy. I’m telling you it’s not easy because sometimes I’m so convinced about my thoughts and when the other person isn’t, it can be frustrating, but we have to remember everyone has different points of views. So maybe my point of view is because of my previous experiences and that other person’s point of view is because of their previous experiences, right? So this is a very important point. Not only to developing leadership in your work scene, but also in your personal relationships.

Then six point is synergy. And this one, I love it so much. I love working with different people because I know that I have a lot of good ideas and characteristics, but so do others on my team. When we put all these different people together and with our different expertise there is this synergy because whatever I’m lacking in, maybe someone else has as an expertise and we can combine these actions. And naturally, these virtues can create some think bigger. So this is something that I already enjoyed when I was starting to work with people that were doing something different to me, that they were learning something completely different, that they had a different point of view and a different way of working, because that would really enrich my perspective and the result. Try to be surrounded with people that are different to you that can add value and don’t always look for the photocopy of yourself because you already have yourself, why would you want a photocopy? Try to work with people who are different to you because this is when you create synergies.

So a leader or someone that is pursuing to develop this leadership, shouldn’t ever feel satisfied with the version that they currently are. They should always pursue better versions of themselves. So try to always improve yourself. You can even improve skills that you didn’t have by attending an online course of something of copywriting or maybe it’s something like your design skills. Whatever it is, try to improve yourself. And it doesn’t have to be overwhelming that you have to do everything at once, but little movements towards this greater self each day. So try to invest in yourself because at the end of the day whatever we are and the way we think will, define our actions, our results, our lifestyle. And this is what we take with us, not the material things, but the person who we become is whatever we take with us. Always invest in yourself.

And I’m very happy that I have the opportunity to talk about that because I know that sometimes these books, everyone talks about them and we think another leadership book, but it is important to invest in ourselves. And it is important to get out of our comfort zones and trying to push us a little bit to  get closer to becoming a better version of ourselves, whatever it is that you want to achieve.
